The British Modern Nature makes folky krautrock, with a fondness for pastoral themes and a philosophical foundation rooted in collectivism and anti-capitalism. Songwriter and singer Jack Cooper (ex-Ultimate Painting) is the group’s main creative force, working on his music in the isolation of his home in the British countryside.
Since debut album How to Live (Bella Union - 2019), Modern Nature has been a unique force within British indie, one that is difficult to categorise correctly yet immediately hits the mark. Cooper and his loosely knit band work with minimalist compositions built from subtle rhythmic patterns and circular, repetitive riffs. As a finishing touch, they add elements of jazz, post-rock and psychedelia, making the whole sound as if Talk Talk, Robert Wyatt, Can and Yo La Tengo have all started jamming together in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds.
For the most recent album by Modern Nature, The Heat Warps (2025), Cooper brought in Tara Cunningham as a new band member, with the aim of working with two guitarists around the rhythm section consisting of Jim Wallis (drums) and Jeff Tobias (bass). The result is a new shift in the sound of Modern Nature towards a slightly more open sound.
