Nikolaj Svaneborg (piano) and Jonas Kardyb (drums) began making music together while studying at the University of Aarhus. Their connection was immediate, as if they had a telepathic understanding when playing together.
Their sessions and jams evolved into compositions. Pieces they create 'in the moment,' as Svaneborg Kardyb describes it. Both musicians focus intently on each other, continuously building upon what the other presents, making it feel as if the music flows naturally. It is precisely this meandering, spontaneous quality that makes Svaneborg Kardyb’s work so intriguing.
Nikolaj Svaneborg plays the keys softly, almost like velvet. This playing style developed because, as a child, he learned to play on a cheap piano that made sharp, piercing sounds with hard key presses. Jonas Kardyb grew up with blues and americana, and incorporates that background into his rhythms and grooves, firmly believing that a jazz drummer doesn’t necessarily have to play in the traditional jazz combo style. You can play however you want.
Musician and label boss Matthew Hallsall signed Svaneborg Kardyb to his open-minded jazz label Gondwana Records (Hania Rani, Portico Quartet, etc.). Their third album ‘Over Tage’ was described by MOJO as ‘a thick Nordic knit on a hostile day'. In October 2024, the duo released ‘Superkilen', their most recent work. Once again, Svaneborg Kardyb proves that they are one of the great promises in New Nordic Jazz.
Their wondrous melodies, delicate minimalism, catchy grooves, subtle electronics, northern atmospheres, and organic interplay make Svaneborg Kardyb a Danish specialty to rival cinnamon buns, Hygge, and Smørrebrød. Put on that wool sweater and head down to Cactus Café!
