Belgian band Pothamus has been regarded as a major new promise in European metal since their debut album 'Raya' (2020). With their unique sound – thundering percussion, explosive riffs, and booming basslines merging into a hypnotic trance – the sludge/post-metal trio immediately gained a following from media outlets like Metal Hammer, Decibel Magazine, and Rock Tribune. From the stages of AB, Trix, and Vooruit, the band moved on to major festivals such as ESNS, ArcTanGent, Alcatraz, and Samhain.
Their latest album 'Abur' (Pelagic - 2024) effortlessly confirms Pothamus' unique and original take on sludge and post-metal, taking them far from the beaten paths. The band's ritualistic sound is fierce, tribal, and driven by percussion and ecstatic rhythms. Icy drones and melodic passages complete the experience. Pothamus are masters at creating mystical and meditative landscapes, effortlessly navigating from deceptive serenity to stormy catharsis. The result is a 44-minute pilgrimage through the soul and the universe, with inspiration drawn from Eastern philosophy, Buddhism, and Western esotericism. Humo (****) describes it as a ‘hypnotic, epic universe'.
For their release show at AB Club, Pothamus had to add a matinee due to high demand. In the fall, the band will return for a tour of the clubs, and of course, Cactus will not be missing from the list.
