Germany's Bohren & der Club of Gore formed in 1992 over a shared love of grindcore, hardcore, doom and death metal. Their 'doom ridden jazz music' strips away everything from the genres that influence them, until only intensity remains. In the case of Bohren & der Club of Gore, that is not in volume or speed but in minimalism and brooding slowness. It's lift music, but when the doors open you step into the setting of a David Lynch film and the lift guy seems to be on the brink of death. It's lounge, but there's a very thick fog around the cocktail chairs and something smouldering under the red carpet. It is the opposite of ambient: music that is almost impossible to escape. An agonisingly slow jazz saxophone dances with eerie vibraphone sounds and each drum beat is so far removed from the previous one that it seems to come out of nowhere. Or as they describe it themselves an "unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and downtuned Autopsy sounds".

For three decades, no one has been able to copy Bohren & Der Club of Gore, so the band stubbornly keeps going. Even their eighth studio album 'Patchouli Blue' (2020) is "Instrumental, slow, uneventful - as always".
