Great granddaughter of legendary singer Siti Binti Saad, Siti Muharam brings a fitting tribute to a powerful female legacy. The ‘golden voice of the Taarab’ breathes fresh air into traditional East-African music, recognizable by a combination of African poly-rhythms, Arabic verses and Indian melodies.
From Zanzibar Binti Saad modernized traditional court music and paved the way for female Taarab singers, which was unheard of at the time. On ‘Siti of Unguja’ (2020), heiress Siti Muharam reinterprets the verses of her great grandmother with her own elastic tenor, and adds new instrumentation, electronics and elements of jazz.
‘Siti of Unguja’ saw Siti Muharam receive the influential ‘Songlines Award for African Artist of the Year’, and was chosen as The Guardian’s ‘Global Record of The Month’ (****). From the albums first seconds, it pulls you into its hypnotic and atmospheric depths. Siti Muharam makes an exclusive appearance at Le Guess Who festival, and adds a ‘Close Encounters’ concert at Cactus Music, a unique opportunity to witness her live.
