The ‘golden voice of the Taarab’ breathes fresh air into traditional East-African music, recognizable by a combination of African poly-rhythms, Arabic verses and Indian melodies.
From Zanzibar Binti Saad modernized traditional court music and paved the way for female Taarab singers, which was unheard of at the time. On ‘Siti of Unguja’ (2020), heiress Siti Muharam reinterprets the verses of her great grandmother with her own elastic tenor, and adds new instrumentation, electronics and elements of jazz.
